History of Rock October 2nd

...1964, first taste of the Kinks, as their self-titled debut arrived. The McCoys released their timeless chart-topper “Hang on Sloopy,” dedicated to a now-forgotten Ohio-based singer named Dorothy Sloop.
... 1965, The Who made their American television debut on Shindig!  The Four Tops, Billie Joe Royal, Ray Peterson, and Gerry and the Pacemakers (in a repeat performance of an earlier episode) also appeared on the show.
...1967, All six members of the Grateful Dead were arrested when police raided their house on 710 Ashbury Street in San Francisco, California for possession of marijuana.  Surprise, surprise.
... 1970, Pink Floyd released the transitional Atom Heart Mother, just ahead of taking control of their space-rock destiny.By the time the follow-up Meddle arrived, they’d jettisoned long-time Floyd producer Norman Smith. But first, there were a few more free-form experiments to undertake – as they dabbled with brass, a choir and – no kidding – bacon. Through largely forgotten today, the album produced tracks that became part of solo shows by David Gilmour and Roger Waters.
... 1970, Frank Zappa treated fans to a little Bongo Fury.
... 1982, Peter Gabriel joined Genesis onstage for the first time since leaving the band in 1975 at the WOMAD benefit in the U.K. during an encore of “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)”.
...1982, Dire Straits reached the top of the U.K. Album Chart for the first time with their fourth album “Love Over Gold”; which went on to spend four weeks at number one.

... 1989, Neil Young recaptured some of the currency he once had in the Vietnam era with the release of the topical and varied Freedom. He began and ended with different takes on “Rockin’ in the Free World,” a bitterly ironic theme for the then-emerging post-Communist period — and Young’s highest-ever charting track on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
...1994, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch performed with the group for the last time at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit Concert in Mountain View, CA.
...1995, Journey announced that the Escape-era lineup had reunited. The following year they released “Trial by Fire”, but by 1998 Steve Perry & Steve Smith had left Journey.
... 1998, Cheap Trick was inducted into Hollywood’s Rockwalk. The induction was hosted by Los Angeles DJ Jim Ladd and all members of the band added their handprints except for singer Robin Zander who wasn’t feeling well.
...1999,John Paul Jones, bassist for Led Zeppelin, performed solo for the first time at the Roisin Dubh in Galway, Ireland.
... 2000,  Radiohead released the album Kid A
